About rural West Yorkshire
West Yorkshire is dominated by its industrial heritage and urban centres, but its upland fringes and green belt retain a robust rural character — especially in the Pennine valleys and moorland edges that shape the west and north of the county.
Areas around Haworth, Hebden Bridge, and Ilkley Moor offer classic hill farming landscapes — sheep-grazed pasture, stone barns, and wind-swept moors managed under agri-environment schemes. Many of these farms have long family histories and maintain local breeds and heritage practices.
To the east, beyond Leeds and Wakefield, small mixed farms produce dairy, poultry, and vegetables. Allotments, peri-urban agriculture, and small-scale producers are increasingly reclaiming space between the towns.
Community woodlands, equestrian centres, and rural initiatives help to sustain a sense of countryside in areas like Holmfirth and Slaithwaite, where rural identity remains strong despite proximity to development.
West Yorkshire’s countryside is often on the edge — but it’s hardworking, defiant, and more deeply rooted than it may appear.
