About rural East Lothian
East Lothian is often described as the garden of Scotland — and with good reason. Stretching along the country’s southeastern coast, the county is defined by golden beaches, rolling farmland, and postcard-perfect villages. Though only a short drive from Edinburgh, East Lothian has preserved a distinctly rural identity rooted in centuries of agriculture, coastal industry, and cultural tradition.
The countryside here is marked by orderly hedgerows, expansive barley fields, and red-roofed farmsteads, many of which have operated for generations. Cereal production, especially barley for whisky, dominates the agricultural landscape, while newer ventures — from organic farms to vineyard experiments — are finding a foothold. Towns like Haddington and North Berwick offer a balance of rural charm and local enterprise, with farmers’ markets, craft fairs, and independent shops giving voice to the region’s agricultural roots.
The coastline is one of East Lothian’s greatest rural assets. From the birdwatcher’s haven of Aberlady Bay to the dramatic cliffs near Dunbar, the area’s beaches and estuaries attract nature lovers, surfers, and long-distance walkers. Inland, landmarks such as Traprain Law — an ancient hill fort — and the Lammermuir Hills provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits and a glimpse into East Lothian’s ancient past.
Culturally, the county holds firm ties to golf, being home to the famous Muirfield links, as well as a number of community courses woven into the rural setting. The John Muir Way, named after the famed conservationist born in Dunbar, reinforces East Lothian’s connection to the land and environmental stewardship.
East Lothian offers a living example of rural Scotland where the soil, the sea, and the past continue to shape a landscape in motion.

What people say…
It's a quiet, fairly rural county… you can hop on a train from a quiet village and be in the middle of the city in minutes.
North Berwick is one of the nicer commutable towns in East Lothian. Haddington is decent.
