About rural Wiltshire
Wiltshire is a quintessential English rural county — broad chalk downs, wide arable fields, ancient trackways, and villages that still orbit working farms. Its landscape is among the most recognisably agricultural in Britain, and many of its traditions remain firmly tied to the land.
The Salisbury Plain dominates the central landscape — open, sweeping, and largely dedicated to arable farming and grazing. Though part of it is used by the military, much is managed through tenant farming and wildlife conservation schemes.
The Marlborough Downs and Cranborne Chase provide upland pasture, while the Vale of Pewsey and Avon Valley support dairying, mixed farms, and some of the county’s most picturesque agricultural scenes.
Wiltshire is also a county of ancient heritage — stone circles, long barrows, and Iron Age field systems remind visitors that farming here has thousands of years of continuity.
The countryside remains not just scenic but intensively worked — a place where the agricultural calendar still marks the passage of time.
