About rural Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire, west of Glasgow, is a county often associated with its industrial past — particularly textiles and shipbuilding — but beyond the towns of Paisley and Renfrew lies a quieter, often-overlooked rural landscape. From the gentle braes to the rolling farmland and forested glens, Renfrewshire’s countryside offers a rich and enduring contrast to its urban centres.

The southern half of the county, especially around Howwood, Lochwinnoch, and Kilbarchan, retains a strong rural character. Here, livestock farming and small-scale agriculture remain integral to the land, with grazing sheep and cattle a familiar sight across open pastures. Dry-stone walls, narrow country lanes, and clusters of whitewashed cottages define the visual texture of this part of the county. Many of these farms have been in the same families for generations, and community ties remain strong in these smaller villages.

The Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park — one of Scotland’s largest country parks — spans much of Renfrewshire’s upland interior. Its heather-covered hills, deep glens, and lochs offer opportunities for walking, birdwatching, and rural education, while active conservation work protects important habitats for species such as hen harriers and otters. Muirshiel’s network of trails connects with ancient drove roads, linking Renfrewshire’s present with its rural past.

In Lochwinnoch, the RSPB nature reserve beside Castle Semple Loch highlights the growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-tourism in the rural economy. Artisan producers, local food initiatives, and heritage projects are revitalising rural life while preserving what has made it special for centuries.

Though small in area, Renfrewshire’s countryside is a place of quiet persistence — where the land is worked, walked, and watched over by communities that continue to value their connection to nature, history, and one another.
